Carroll County is at the divide between western Iowa’s Loess Hills and central Iowa’s flatter terrain. Situated in the west-central part of the state, the county is primarily agricultural.
Carroll is the biggest town and it mixes German heritage with modern amenities. Trestle bridge fans (yes, they exist) make pilgrimages to see the old Milwaukee Railroad bridge near Manning.
The population of the county is about 20,000, and it’s a hub for surrounding rural communities. Swan Lake State Park is a local favorite for camping and wildlife watching. For its size, Carroll County has a surprising number of amenities and attractions.
