Kansas County Maps
Kansas is home to 105 counties, a number that places it near the top in terms of county count across the United States. Only a handful of states have more. Kansas’s counties stretch across varied landscapes, from fertile farmland in some areas and rugged, untamed terrain in others.
Kansas Counties
The most populated county in Kansas is Johnson County, located in the northeastern part of the state. It’s part of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which explains its large population. Overland Park, Olathe, and Shawnee are some of the major cities here. On the other end of the spectrum is Greeley County, the least populous. Nestled in the far western part of the state, Greeley’s sparse population is due to its remote location and the vast stretches of open land.
In terms of size, Butler County takes the crown as the largest in Kansas. It spreads over 1,400 square miles with land and several reservoirs. On the other hand, Wyandotte County is the smallest in size. But it still has a relatively high amount of urban density.
Kansas counties have a rich history, with some of their names reflecting the state’s roots. Many are named after Native American tribes, early explorers, or key figures in U.S. history. The first county, Leavenworth County, was established in 1855, setting the stage for the others that followed.
From the Flint Hills to the High Plains, Kansas counties are like a patchwork of quilt made by someone who really loves rectangles. They’re all a little different, but from space, it probably looks like one big wheat field. Just don’t mention “The Wizard of Oz” because they’re still sensitive about that.
