Rhode Island County Maps

Rhode Island only has got 5 counties, which makes it the second-lowest in the country. Only Delaware has fewer with its 3. It makes sense though because the whole state is only about 1,545 square miles. You’ve got beaches along the coast, some hills inland, and a bunch of islands scattered around Narragansett Bay. Each county has a bit of everything, really.

Providence County is where most of the action is. It’s home to Providence, the state capital and biggest city. More than half of Rhode Island’s people live there. It has universities, hospitals, and a decent-sized job market. The smallest county is Bristol County and it’s only about 45 square miles. Not much elbow room, but it has some nice coastal towns.

When it comes to size, Providence County is also the biggest. But it’s only about 436 square miles. But you could still fit three of them in Rhode Island’s neighbor to the north, Worcester County, Massachusetts. The smallest county is size is Bristol County again. It’s so small you could walk across it in a couple of hours if you were feeling ambitious.

Rhode Island’s counties have been around for a while. They were set up back in 1703 when the state was still a colony. The countries themselves don’t really do much these days. Rhode Island got rid of county government in 1842. Now they’re mostly just used for sorting mail and keeping track of property records.

Despite being small, Rhode Island’s counties each have their own character. I think there’s more variety than you might expect.
