Alabama County Maps

Alabama’s patchwork of counties is as diverse as its landscape. The state is divided into 67 counties as shown below.

Alabama Counties

Jefferson County takes the crown as Alabama is most populous. It’s no wonder, with Birmingham (the state’s largest city) calling it home. The county’s industrial past and current role as a medical and financial hub keep drawing folks in. On the flip side, Greene County holds the title for least populous. Tucked away in the western part of the state, it’s mostly rural, with rolling hills and forests dominating the landscape. No deserts here, but plenty of Southern charm.

When it comes to size, Baldwin County stretches out as the largest, covering a whopping 2,027 square miles. It has a bit of everything, including beaches, rivers, and bays included. In fact, about 615 square miles of Baldwin County is water.

Etowah County, on the other hand, is the smallest, but don’t let its size fool you. It packs in the scenic Lookout Mountain and a chunk of the Coosa River.

The story of Alabama’s counties is steeped in history. Many have names with Native American origins, like Tallapoosa and Tuscaloosa. Others honor national figures or local pioneers. Interestingly, the first county, Washington County, was established way back in 1800. Actually, some of these counties have been around since Alabama first became a state, while others popped up later as folks spread out.
