Indiana Counties

In the state of Indiana, Marion County has the highest population and it’s no mystery why. Indianapolis, the state capital and largest city, calls it home. Ohio County is the smallest in terms of people. It’s in the southeast, without any major cities to draw folks in. No towering mountains or vast deserts here. It’s just a peaceful countryside and a slower pace of life.

Most Populous: Marion County
Least Populous: Ohio County

When it comes to size, Allen County takes the crown. It’s a sprawling 657 square miles, with Fort Wayne as its urban heart. Plenty of room to spread out there. At the other end of the spectrum, Ohio County pops up again as the tiniest, at just 87 square miles. Interestingly, Lake County boasts the most water area of any Indiana county, with over 20% of its area as water. Come here to fish.

Largest Area: Allen County
Smallest Area: Ohio County

The story of Indiana’s counties is tied to its history. Many county names honor important figures from the early days of the state and nation. Take Tippecanoe County, for instance. It’s named after a famous 1811 battle. Knox County holds the title of oldest, established way back in 1790 when the area was still part of the Northwest Territory.
