Idaho Counties
What’s the most populated county in Idaho? Ada County takes the population crown, and it’s no surprise why. Boise, the state capital, calls it home. On the flip side, there’s Clark County. Barely 800 folks call it home, making it Idaho’s least populous county. It’s a place where nature rules.
Most Populous: Ada County
Least Populous: Clark County

When it comes to size, Idaho County is the biggest. It’s massive, covering over 8,500 square miles. A good chunk of it is taken up by the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. The smallest county is Payette County. It’s just barely over 400 square miles in area.
Largest Area: Idaho County
Smallest Area: Payette County
Idaho’s counties have some stories behind their names. Take Nez Perce County, named after the Native American tribe. Or Kootenai County, which comes from a word meaning “water people.” The state’s first county, Boise County, was established way back in 1863, right after Idaho became a territory.
