Onondaga County, New York
Syracuse is the beating heart of Onondaga County. This central New York county sits roughly halfway between Albany and Buffalo. It’s home to the Great New York State Fair, bringing in people every summer.

Onondaga County has more hills than you’d expect. The land rises south of Syracuse into steep ridges and glacial valleys. Onondaga Lake sits low in the center. The terrain shapes the city itself, with neighborhoods built around hillsides. The Finger Lakes’ edge brushes in from the west, adding to the relief.

From above, Syracuse dominates the middle and Onondaga Lake forms a dark oval just northwest of downtown. Suburbs form rings around the core.
