Piscataquis County, Maine

Piscataquis Location Map Maine

Piscataquis County is Maine’s second largest in area. Despite its size, it’s the least populous county. It’s a wild and rugged place, covering a huge swath of north-central Maine.

The county’s name comes from the Abenaki word for “branch of the river.” Speaking of rivers, the county boasts some of the best whitewater rafting in New England on the Penobscot and Kennebec.

Moosehead Lake is the largest in Maine and it’s here too. It’s a paradise for outdoorsy types. Hikers come to Baxter State Park to tackle Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
