Sumter County, Florida

Sumter County is like a crash course in Florida’s changing landscape. The Villages, that massive retirement community, covers a big chunk of it. But there’s more to the county than golf carts and pickleball. Bushnell, the county seat, still feels like old Florida.
You’ve got Lake Panasoffkee for fishing and boating. The county is growing fast, but head west and you’ll find cattle ranches and horse farms. Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is where the Second Seminole War kicked off.
Traffic can be nuts around The Villages. But the rest of the county is pretty chill. Sumter has no beaches, but plenty of lakes and springs. It’s a weird mix of retiree heaven and rural Florida. You can line dance at a country bar, then hit a swanky restaurant in The Villages. It’s Florida in transition, for better or worse.
