Sussex County, New Jersey

Sussex Location Map New Jersey

Sussex County is up in the far northwest corner of New Jersey, bordering Connecticut and Pennsylvania. It’s about as far from the Jersey Shore stereotype as you can get. This is where the Garden State earns its name. Rolling hills, forests, and farmland dominate the landscape.

The Appalachian Trail cuts through here, offering hikers some of the best views in the state. Sussex is lake country too. Lake Hopatcong and Swartswood Lake are perfect for swimming and boating. The county has a Space Farms Zoo and Museum. It’s part wildlife park, part collection of… well, everything.

Newton is the county seat here and has a quaint downtown with some great restaurants. Winters can be harsh up here, but that just means great skiing at Mountain Creek. Sussex County is a breath of fresh air in the state. It’s where New Jerseyans go when they want to escape everyday hustle.
