Wapello County, Iowa
Wapello County is situated in southeastern Iowa. It’s anchored by the city of Ottumwa, which is also the county. The Des Moines River runs through it from southeast to northwest.
U.S. Highways 34 and 63 intersect here, making it a key regional crossroads. The American Gothic House, located nearby in Eldon, is a must-see for fans of Grant Wood’s famous painting.
Overall, Wapello County also offers plenty of green space, like the Wapello County Trails system for walking and biking. Wapello County’s seen better days, sure, but folks here have made this corner of Iowa something special again.
