South Dakota Counties

Meade County sprawls across western South Dakota, from the Black Hills to the prairie. It’s one of the biggest counties in the state.

Mellette County is in the southern part of South Dakota. It’s mostly open ranges with cattle and the occasional oil pump.

Miner County sits in east-central South Dakota. The east fork of the Vermillion River winds through farmland and prairies.

Home to Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County is the most populous in South Dakota. This county in the southeast corner of the state.

Moody County stretches along South Dakota’s eastern border, next to Minnesota. The Big Sioux River forms its eastern edge.

The Badlands paint an otherworldly picture in Oglala Lakota County. You can find Badlands National Park stretching in the north region.

The Black Hills dominate the western landscape of Pennington County. Mount Rushmore brings in tourists by the millions each year.

Perkins County sits in the northwestern corner of South Dakota. This county is mostly known for Lemmon with its unique Petrified Wood Park.

Potter County is right in the middle of South Dakota, slightly to the north. The Missouri River forms the county’s western border.

Roberts County is up in the northeastern corner of South Dakota. Lakes fill the landscape. it borders Minnesota and North Dakota.

Sanborn County is right in the heart of South Dakota. The James River Valley cuts through the county. Woonsocket is the county seat.

Spink County stretches across the northeastern part of South Dakota. Redfield, the county seat, is the “Pheasant Capital of the World”.

Stanley County is in the geographic center of South Dakota. The Missouri River forms Stanley County’s eastern border.

Sully County lies in central South Dakota. The Missouri River and Lake Oahe form its western border. Both are a big draw for fishermen.

Todd County sits on South Dakota’s southern border with Nebraska. It’s part of the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
