Mellette County, South Dakota

Mellette County is in the southern part of South Dakota. It’s mostly open ranges with cattle and the occasional oil pump. White River runs through it.
The county’s named after Arthur Mellette, governor of the Dakota Territory. Summers are hot and dry, winters are long and cold. But folks here are used to extremes.
Wood Mountain towers over the landscape. Well, as much as anything towers on the Great Plains. The Rosebud Sioux Reservation covers part of the county. White River is the only town of any size. Life’s not easy here, but it’s real.
