Chatham County, Georgia
If you want a taste of coastal Georgia, Chatham County is where it’s at. Savannah is the heart of it all, a city dripping with history. It’s the oldest city in Georgia, and it shows. The county stretches out to the Atlantic, including Tybee Island, a beach town with its own laid-back vibe.
Chatham is named after William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. The Savannah River forms the northern border, busy with container ships heading to the port. There’s old money in the historic district, college kids from SCAD, and working folks keeping the port running.
Approximately 300,000 live here. Tourists come to the squares and riverfront. The seafood is fresh, the drinks are strong, and the ghost stories are plenty. Chatham County has its issues, sure, but it has charm by the bucketload.
