Gila County is in central Arizona, in the Tonto National Forest. About 55,000 people live here. The county seat is Globe, an old mining town. Payson is the largest town and a popular spot for people from Phoenix to escape the heat.

The landscape is rugged, with mountains, canyons, and pine forests. Roosevelt Lake, the largest lake in central Arizona, is here. Summers can be hot in the lower areas, but milder in the mountains.

The county has a rich Native American history, with Apache and Tonto Apache reservations. The Mogollon Rim, a huge cliff, runs through the northern part of the county.
