Arizona Counties

Apache County is in northeast Arizona. It’s a big county, covering over 11,000 square miles. But it only has about 71,000 people.

Cochise County is in southeast Arizona, bordering Mexico. It’s known for its Wild West history, including the town of Tombstone.

Coconino County is in northern Arizona. It’s the second largest county by area in the lower 48 states, but only has about 150,000 people.

Gila County is in central Arizona, in the Tonto National Forest. About 55,000 people live here. The county seat is Globe, an old mining town.

Graham County is in southeast Arizona. About 40,000 people live here. The county seat is Safford, which is also the largest town.

Greenlee County is Arizona’s least populous county, with only about 10,000 people. It’s located in the east, bordering New Mexico.

La Paz County is in western Arizona, along the Colorado River. It’s one of Arizona’s newest counties, formed as early as 1983.

Maricopa County is Arizona’s most populous, with over 4 million people. It’s mostly desert and includes Phoenix, the state capital.

Mohave County is in northwest Arizona, bordering Nevada and California. It’s a large county with about 200,000 people.

Navajo County is in northeast Arizona. About 110,000 people live here. Much of the Navajo and Hopi reservations are in this county.

Pima County is in southern Arizona. About 1.1 million people live here. Tucson, the second-largest city in Arizona, is the county seat.

Pinal County is in central Arizona, between Phoenix and Tucson. About 465,000 people live here. Florence is the county seat.

Santa Cruz County is in southern Arizona, bordering Mexico. About 50,000 people live here. Nogales is the county seat and border crossing.

Yavapai County is in central Arizona. About 250,000 people live here. Prescott is the county seat. Mining history is important here.

Yuma County is in southwest Arizona, bordering California and Mexico. About 200,000 people live here. Yuma is the seat and largest city.
