Lucas County lies in south-central Iowa, about an hour southeast of Des Moines. Chariton, the county seat, was laid out in 1849 and named after the Chariton River.
The county honors Robert Lucas, Iowa’s first territorial governor. Stephens State Forest covers a significant portion of the county, offering hiking trails and hunting grounds.
Red Haw State Park is a local favorite, especially in the spring when the redbuds bloom and the lake is perfect for fishing. Don’t rush through this county because there’s lots to see, especially parks.
