Madison County, Montana

Southwest Montana is home to Madison County, a place where the Old West is still alive and kicking. It’s named after James Madison, the former US president. But there’s also Madison River, a fly-fishing paradise.
Virginia City is the county seat and looks like it’s straight out of a Western movie. And guess what? It kind of is. This old gold mining town is now a living history museum. You can pan for gold, ride in a stagecoach, or grab a drink in a saloon that’s been serving since the 1860s.
The Madison Range towers over the valley so it has killer views and great hiking. Ranching is big here, and you’ll see plenty of cowboys who aren’t just for show. If you’re lucky, you might catch the annual rodeo in Ennis.
