Mathews County, Virginia

Water, water everywhere. That’s Mathews County for you. This little peninsula juts out into the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula. It’s surrounded by water on three sides.
You can find beaches and marinas all along the shoreline. If you don’t own a boat here, you’re in the minority. Watermen still ply the bay, bringing in crabs and oysters. You can buy them fresh off the boat.
The county’s small with just 84 square miles of land. But it’s big on charm. Mathews is the main town. Hurricane Isabel hit the county hard in 2003. But they rebuilt, stronger than ever. That’s the Mathews way. Resilient, close-knit, and fiercely proud of their little slice of coastal paradise.
