Quitman County, Mississippi

Quitman County is tucked away in the northwest corner of Mississippi. It’s named after John A. Quitman, a former governor of Mississippi who led a pretty wild life as a soldier and politician.
The county seat, Marks, got its name from Leopold Marks, who ran a store there back in the day. Now, you might think there’s not much going on in Quitman County, but you’d be wrong.
It has a rich history tied to the civil rights movement. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. kicked off his Poor People’s Campaign right here in Marks.
