Ringgold County, Iowa

Ringgold County hunkers down in Iowa’s far southern tier, bordered by Missouri. Mount Ayr, the county seat, was named after poet Robert Burns’ hometown in Scotland.
The county honors Major Samuel Ringgold, a casualty of the Mexican-American War. With only about 5,000 residents, it’s the second least populous county in Iowa.
Mount Ayr has several covered bridges and the Depot Museum, which preserves local railroad history. Interestingly, Ringgold County was a stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.
