US Counties

Kingsbury County is in the east, in the heart of South Dakota’s lakes region. De Smet is the county seat with Laura Ingalls Wilder home.

The name says it all. Lakes are everywhere in this part of South Dakota. Lake Madison. Lake Herman. Brant Lake. They’re all here.

Lawrence County is where the Black Hills National Forest really show off. It’s in western South Dakota, right up against Wyoming.

Lincoln County sits in the southeast corner of South Dakota, next to Iowa. It’s a mix of small towns, farmland, and Sioux Falls.

Lyman County is right in the middle of South Dakota, where the plains meet the Badlands. The Missouri River forms the western border.

Marshall County is located in northeastern South Dakota. It’s mostly flat farmland, broken up by scattered lakes and wetlands.

McCook County is in southeast South Dakota, just east of the James River. It’s prime farming country, with fields of corn, soybeans.

McPherson County occupies the north-central part of South Dakota. It’s a land of rolling prairies and scattered lakes.

Meade County sprawls across western South Dakota, from the Black Hills to the prairie. It’s one of the biggest counties in the state.

Mellette County is in the southern part of South Dakota. It’s mostly open ranges with cattle and the occasional oil pump.

Miner County sits in east-central South Dakota. The east fork of the Vermillion River winds through farmland and prairies.

Home to Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County is the most populous in South Dakota. This county in the southeast corner of the state.

Moody County stretches along South Dakota’s eastern border, next to Minnesota. The Big Sioux River forms its eastern edge.

The Badlands paint an otherworldly picture in Oglala Lakota County. You can find Badlands National Park stretching in the north region.

The Black Hills dominate the western landscape of Pennington County. Mount Rushmore brings in tourists by the millions each year.
