Marshall County, South Dakota

Marshall County hugs the North Dakota border in northeastern South Dakota. It’s mostly flat farmland, broken up by scattered lakes and wetlands. The James River valley cuts through the western part of the county.
Roy Lake is a local favorite for fishing and camping. But there are tons of lakes here. You’ll find some of the best pheasant hunting in the state here.
The county was named after John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Britton is the county seat. Winters are long and cold. But ask any local, and they’ll tell you the wide-open spaces make it worth it.
