Van Buren County hugs Iowa’s southeast border with Missouri. Named after President Martin Van Buren, it’s a count that’s steeped in history.
Keosauqua is the county seat and it sits on a horseshoe bend of the Des Moines River. It’s part of the “Villages of Van Buren” tourism area.
The Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, one of Iowa’s oldest state parks, offers scenic hiking along river bluffs. With only about 7,000 residents, Van Buren County is the definition of rural Iowa.
