Coal County is tucked away in the southeastern part of Oklahoma. As you might guess from the name, coal mining used to be big here. These days, it’s mostly ranching and agriculture.
Coalgate is the county seat is a small town with a lot of heart. The terrain is hilly and wooded, a far cry from the flat plains people often picture when they think of Oklahoma.
Fishing is popular at Coalgate Reservoir and the Clear Boggy Creek. You’ll find some great camping spots too. The county has a rich Native American history. Many Choctaw citizens call this area home.
