Dewey County is located in north-central South Dakota. The Missouri River forms the eastern border of this county. A large part of the county is within the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.
Ranching is big business here. You’ll see plenty of cattle grazing on the open plains. The county was named after William P. Dewey, a surveyor.
Timber Lake serves as the county seat. It’s a small, tight-knit community. The landscape is rugged and beautiful. It’s one of the biggest counties in South Dakota in terms of area.
