Palo Alto County, Iowa
Palo Alto County sprawls across north-central Iowa. Its name is oddly borrowed from a Texas battlefield of the Mexican-American War.
Emmetsburg is the county seat and it embraces its Irish heritage with gusto. In fact, it’s been hosting Iowa’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade since 1961.
Its population is spread thin so it’s mostly farming across the county. Five Island Lake, right in Emmetsburg, offers fishing, boating, and a beach. That’s not bad for landlocked Iowa.
