Emmet County sits at Iowa’s northern edge, next to Minnesota. Estherville, the county seat, has a legit out-of-this-world claim to fame. In 1879, a meteor exploded over town, scattering fragments across the countryside.
The Des Moines River cuts through the county, but also through Estherville. Emmet County also has a history tied to the railroads, with Estherville historically serving as a key transportation hub
The county is also home to Fort Defiance State Park. This wooded area with hiking trails and a rich history dating back to the frontier days. The county features several lakes, including the popular Ingham and High Lakes.
