Pottawattamie County stretches along Iowa’s western border. Its name a mouthful derived from a Native American tribe. The county seat (Council Bluffs) sits right across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska.
The county played a key role in the Mormon Trail and transcontinental railroad. You can learn about both at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum.
With about 93,000 residents, it’s one of Iowa’s larger counties. Lake Manawa State Park provides a beach and boating, a rare find in western Iowa. Pottawattamie’s Council Bluffs is nicknamed the “Black Squirrel Capital of the World”.
