St. Croix County is located just east of the Twin Cities. The St. Croix River forms its western border with Minnesota. Hudson, the county seat, is a popular day trip for folks from the Cities. There’s a mix of bedroom communities and rural areas here.
The county has seen a lot of growth in recent years as more people move out from the metro. You’ll find some great parks along the river, perfect for hiking or picnicking.
Farming is still important, but there’s a growing tech presence too. Winters can be brutal, but summers are gorgeous. The area has some interesting history. It’s a place that balances small-town feel with easy access to big city amenities.

St. Croix County has a rugged feel to it thanks to its location in the unglaciated Driftless fringe. The St. Croix River marks the western border, cutting a wide floodplain. Hills and ridges ripple through the rest of the county, especially near the riverbanks.
