Stephens County, Oklahoma

Stephens County is right in the heart of southern Oklahoma. Duncan, the biggest city, calls itself the “Crape Myrtle Capital”. They’re not kidding. These flowering trees are everywhere.
The county has deep ties to the oil industry. Halliburton started here, if you can believe it. The landscape is mostly flat, with some gentle hills thrown in for good measure.
It’s cattle country, with ranches in the countryside. Summers are hot. Like, really hot. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is a must-visit if you’re into cowboy history. Despite its size, the county has a surprising amount of cultural offerings.
