Hyde County, North Carolina

Waterways define Hyde County. It’s located in eastern North Carolina, bordering the Pamlico Sound. The county includes part of the Outer Banks. Ocracoke Island, with its famous lighthouse, is here but it’s only accessible by ferry.
The mainland is sparsely populated. Swan Quarter is the county seat but it’s a tiny coastal village. Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge is a major attraction. It’s home to the largest natural lake in North Carolina.
Commercial fishing is a big part of the local economy. The county has a rich maritime history, which you can learn about at the Ocracoke Preservation Museum. Hyde County is off the beaten path. But that’s all good.
