Kalawao County, Hawaii

Kalawao County is the smallest county in Hawaii, and probably the most unique in the entire United States. It’s located on a tiny peninsula on the north coast of Molokai. The whole area is stunningly beautiful, with steep sea cliffs and lush vegetation.
The county has a dark history. It was once a forced isolation settlement for people with Hansen’s disease (leprosy). Today, it’s mostly empty. A handful of former patients still live there by choice. It’s hard to get to without any road access.
Kalaupapa National Historical Park now preserves the area’s history, which basically covers the entire area. Visitor access is strictly limited. The county has no elected officials. It’s managed by the Hawaii Department of Health. Kalawao County is a place frozen in time, a reminder of a painful past set in paradise.
