Maui County, Hawaii
Maui County spans three islands: Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. But Maui, known as the “Valley Isle,” is the main attraction. It’s got a bit of everything. Pristine beaches line the coasts. Haleakala, a massive active volcano, dominates the interior.
The infamous Road to Hana winds through lush rainforests. Lahaina town showcases Hawaii’s whaling past. Then there’s Paia, a funky surf town. Kihei and Wailea cater to tourists with resorts and golf courses. Upcountry Maui feels like cowboy country. Lanai is mostly owned by Larry Ellison.
Maui County is quiet and exclusive. It also consists of Lanai, an uninhabited island. Molokai is the least developed, proudly resisting big tourism. Whale watching is in prime time in winter. Locals grumble about traffic and rising costs. But they still love their ocean waves.
