Wilkes County is in the northwestern part of North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Mountains loom large over it. Outdoor recreation is a big deal, including Stone Mountain State Park.
Moonshine has a storied history here. Actually, the county was once known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World”. The MerleFest music festival puts the county on the map each year in Wilkesboro.
Agriculture still drives much of the economy. But there’s a push for new industries too. Wilkes Community College is a point of pride because it’s helping to train the next generation of workers.
