Hertford County lies in the northeastern part of North Carolina, bordering Virginia. It’s a place steeped in history. Winton, the county seat, is one of the oldest towns in the state.
Chowan University is the oldest Baptist school in North Carolina. You can find it right here in Murfreesboro. The county played a role in the Underground Railroad.
While the Meherrin River forms its western border, Chowan River carves out the eastern boundary. The county has survived fires and floods. Hertford County is also known for its agriculture with peanuts and cotton as major crops.
