Gates County, North Carolina

Gates County hugs the Virginia border in northeastern North Carolina. It’s quiet. Real quiet. And that’s how locals like it. Gatesville is the county seat at the center of it all. Festivals are social events here. Everyone turns out.
The Great Dismal Swamp covers a big chunk of the county. It’s not so dismal, though as kayakers enjoy this spot. Merchants Millpond State Park also showcases its swampy landscapes. Canoeing is one of the park’s major attraction. But watch out for alligators.
This is farm country. Peanuts are a big deal. So are sweet potatoes. You won’t find any big box stores here. Mom and pop shops still rule. It’s the kind of place where a traffic jam means getting stuck behind a tractor on a country road.
