San Miguel County, New Mexico

San Miguel County straddles the line between the high plains and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northeastern New Mexico. Las Vegas is the county seat. No, not that Las Vegas. This one’s older and way more chill.
The county has more than 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. That’s a lot of history. The Pecos Wilderness is here too. It’s a hiker’s paradise. Vast grasslands in the east give way to pine-covered mountains in the west.
Ranching is still big business so it’s common to see cowboys working cattle (just like in the old days). The county has a rich cultural mix. Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American influences are everywhere. Storrie Lake is a popular spot for fishing and boating.
