Quay County, New Mexico

Quay County is out on the eastern plains of New Mexico. It’s in the east of New Mexico, bordering Texas. It’s where the short grass prairie meets the caprock escarpment.
Tucumcari is the main town and county seat. It’s a slice of Route 66 nostalgia. Neon signs and vintage motels line the main drag. Ranching is big business here so the county has a Wild West history.
Outlaws used to hide out in the nearby mesas. These days, it’s quieter. But no less interesting. Ute Lake is a big draw for fishing and boating. The Canadian River runs through, which is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
