Scotland County is in the southern part of North Carolina, right on the South Carolina border. It’s named after the country of Scotland, reflecting the area’s Scottish heritage.
In fact, there’s an annual Highland Games festival that celebrates Scottish culture with bagpipes, kilts, and caber tossing. Laurinburg is the county seat and largest town. It was once home to John Charles McNeill, North Carolina’s first poet laureate.
Agriculture plays a big role in the local economy. Cotton and soybeans are major crops. St. Andrews University is known for its equestrian program, situated right in Laurinburg.
