Socorro County, New Mexico

Socorro County stretches from the Rio Grande valley to the Plains of San Agustin in the heart of New Mexico. It’s the second largest county in the state. This place has some serious science cred. The Very Large Array, that massive field of radio telescopes, is here. It’s like something out of a sci-fi movie.
Socorro is the county seat and is home to New Mexico Tech. It’s a top-notch engineering school. But it’s not all about science. The county has deep roots in Spanish colonial history. The name “Socorro” means “help” in Spanish. Legend has it the Piro Indians helped hungry Spanish colonists.
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a big draw. Thousands of sandhill cranes winter there. It’s a sight to see. The Magdalena Mountains offer great hiking and camping. Cibola National Forest occupies the southwest of the county.
