Irion County, Texas

Irion County is a small piece of West Texas, not far from San Angelo. Mertzon is the county seat. It’s pretty sparsely populated. Fewer than 2,000 folks call it home.
Ranching is still big here. Oil too. The landscape’s rugged – mesquite, cactus, and rocky hills. Summers are scorchers. There’s not much nightlife, but the stars are something else.
The county is named after Robert Anderson Irion, a secretary of state of the Republic of Texas. You might spot a horned toad if you’re lucky. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone.
