Macon County is in the westernmost part of North Carolina. Franklin, the county seat, is nicknamed as the “Gem Capital of the World”. And for good reason. It’s known for its abundance of rubies and sapphires here.
The Nantahala National Forest covers much of the county so it brings in a lot of hikers and campers. Macon County has deep Cherokee roots. There’s also a large community of Scottish settlers that you can learn about at the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin.
Highlands is a small town in the county, which is a popular mountain getaway. The views from Wayah Bald are breathtaking. Macon County is full of natural beauty. Waterfalls, mountains, forests. Yep, it’s all here.
