Mercer County, North Dakota

Mercer County sits in the heart of North Dakota coal country. Massive draglines claw at the earth day and night. Power plants convert lignite to electricity. But it’s not all industry here.
Lake Sakakawea’s blue waters beckon to the north. This is where fishermen reel in walleye and northern pike. Stanton, the county seat, is a sleepy little town. But it comes alive during the county fair each July.
Rodeos and pie-eating contests draw crowds. Yum. The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site preserves traces of ancient cultures. You can still see depressions in the earth where earth lodges once stood.
