Union County sits way up in the northeastern corner of New Mexico, bordering Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. It’s about as far as you can get from Albuquerque and still be in the state. Clayton is the county seat, which is a big ranching town.
Capulin Volcano National Monument is the big attraction. It’s an extinct cinder cone volcano. You can drive right up to the rim. The views are insane. This county has seen some history. The Santa Fe Trail passed through here. You can still see wagon ruts.
Folsom Man was discovered nearby. He’s one of the oldest examples of humans in North America. The county is mostly grassland. It’s prime cattle country. Pronghorn antelope outnumber people. Clayton Lake State Park is known for its dinosaur tracks. They’re preserved in the shoreline rock.
