Switzerland County, Indiana
Switzerland County is in the state’s southeast corner. Vevay, the county seat, sits pretty on the Ohio River, looking more like an old postcard than a county hub.
Don’t let the name fool you because there are no Alps here, just rolling hills and river views. But the Swiss heritage is real, thanks to some ambitious settlers who thought this spot would be perfect for vineyards.
Spoiler alert: It wasn’t quite Napa Valley, but the wine-making dream lives on at the annual Swiss Wine Festival. The county’s claim to fame? It’s the birthplace of the first commercial winery in the United States.
