Wilkinson County, Georgia
Wilkinson County is a slice of rural Georgia that time seems to have forgotten. It’s about a half hour drive from Macon, to the east. Irwinton is the county seat, located in the center of the county.
Kaolin mining keeps the economy going. You’ll see the chalky white clay in quarries dotting the landscape. The Oconee River forms the county’s eastern border.
Wilkinson County isn’t trying to impress anyone. It’s just doing its thing, the same way it has for generations. It’s Georgia at its most authentic, warts and all.
