Zapata County, Texas

Zapata County is way down in South Texas. The Rio Grande forms the southern border of Zapata County. It’s dry in this region of Texas. But the river brings it to life. Fishing is big business here, especially for largemouth bass.
The county’s only about 1,000 square miles, but it has character. Zapata, the county seat, is named after local rancher Antonio Zapata. He was quite a character himself.
There’s a lot of history in these parts. Ancient fossils have been found here. So have arrowheads from long-ago tribes. It’s not a wealthy place, but the people are proud of their home.
