Dawes County, Nebraska

Dawes County is way up in the northwest corner of Nebraska, right in the heart of the Pine Ridge region. Chadron is the county seat, located at the intersection of highways US 20 and US 385.
The landscape here is unlike what most people picture when they think of Nebraska. We’re talking pine-covered buttes, deep canyons, and rugged badlands. The county includes part of the Nebraska National Forest.
Ranching is big here, but so is education thanks to Chadron State College. Winters can be brutal, with heavy snow. And if you’re into paleontology, you might be interested in the mammoth fossils that have been found in the area.
