Portage County, Wisconsin

Portage County sits right in the middle of Wisconsin. Stevens Point is the biggest city and is home to a University of Wisconsin campus. Portage County has a thing for beer. There are several craft breweries scattered around.
You’ll find a mix of farmland and forests here. The area’s history is tied to the lumber industry, and you can still see that influence today. Visitors come here for hunting, fishing, and hiking.
It’s named after the French word for “carrying place,” referring to the portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. The Wisconsin River cuts through the county, creating some prime fishing and kayaking spots.
